PS5, PS4 & Xbox No HDMI Signal? Causes & Fixes

Turn your console on and the TV just says “No Signal” or stays black? It's a common and fixable fault on PS5, PS4 and Xbox. Here's how to find the cause and put it right.

Quick checks first

  • Check the TV input matches the HDMI socket the console is plugged into (HDMI 1, 2, 3…).
  • Try a different HDMI cable – and a different HDMI port on the TV.
  • Test on another TV if you can, to rule out the telly.
  • Power-cycle the console (full shutdown, not rest mode) and the TV.

If it still shows no signal on a known-good TV and cable, the problem is almost always the console's HDMI port.

The usual cause: a damaged HDMI port

The HDMI port on a console is fragile. A knock to a plugged-in cable, or years of plugging and unplugging, bends or breaks the tiny pins inside the port – and you lose the picture. You can sometimes see bent or pushed-in pins with a torch.

Less common causes

If the port looks perfect and a new cable on another TV still fails, the fault may be deeper – the HDMI encoder chip or the console's power. We diagnose all of this before any work starts.

Why does my PS5 / Xbox say no HDMI signal?
Most often a damaged HDMI port on the console (bent pins), or the wrong TV input or a faulty cable. Rule out the cable, TV input and a second TV first; if it still fails, it's the port.

Yes – the port is replaced by micro-soldering a new one onto the board. It's far cheaper than a new console.
