Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Drift: Causes & How to Fix It

What is Joy-Con drift?

Drift is when the analogue stick registers movement even though you're not touching it. It's caused by wear and dust inside the thumbstick mechanism: the tiny sensor that reads the stick's position degrades over time, so the Switch thinks the stick is being pushed when it's at rest.

DIY fixes (and why they don't last)

• Recalibrate the stick: System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks. This can mask mild drift for a while.
• Clean it: a puff of compressed air, or a little electronic contact cleaner, around the base of the stick can clear dust.

These help temporarily, but because the sensor itself is worn, drift almost always comes back. The only permanent fix is to replace the joystick.

The permanent fix: joystick replacement

Replacing the worn thumbstick module clears drift completely. It's a fiddly job that needs the controller carefully opened and the stick de-soldered and replaced.
