PC / Computer Forensics — usage guide

Keeping a live, running computer awake is critical when the disk uses full-disk encryption (BitLocker, FileVault, VeraCrypt). If the machine sleeps or locks, you can be shut out behind an encryption password and lose access to volatile evidence.

1. Secure the scene first. If the suspect machine is on, do not shut it down. Plug the MJ-3 into a free USB port to stop it sleeping or locking while you work.
2. Capture volatile data / RAM. With the machine kept awake, run your live-acquisition or memory-capture tools (e.g. RAM dump) to preserve running processes, network connections and encryption keys before anything is powered off.
3. Transport without shutdown. Pair the MJ-3 with a WiebeTech HotPlug to move a running computer back to the lab on an uninterruptible supply — no shutdown, no re-login, no encryption lockout.
4. Long imaging jobs. During multi-hour disk imaging or decryption, the MJ-3 stops the workstation locking mid-job and interrupting the acquisition.
5. Document it. Note the use of the jiggler in your contemporaneous notes / chain-of-custody log so the method is defensible in court.

Mobile Forensics — usage guide

In mobile work the jiggler keeps the analysis workstation (and, where applicable, an unlocked exhibit) awake throughout long extractions.

1. Keep the extraction PC alive. Logical/physical/full-file-system extractions on Cellebrite UFED, Magnet GrayKey, XRY and similar can run for many hours. The MJ-3 stops the host workstation sleeping and aborting an extraction part-way through.
2. Hold an unlocked device open. When a handset has been lawfully unlocked, keeping the connected workstation active helps maintain the session while imaging completes.
3. Unattended overnight extractions. Leave a brute-force or full-file-system job running overnight without the workstation locking and pausing the process.
4. Programmed sequences. Use the scripting software to automate repetitive on-screen steps during bulk device processing.
